The Carrs

The Carrs parkland along the River Bollin, Wilmslow

Perhaps the greatest virtue of The Carrs is the illusion of isolation it creates. Trees line the slopes of the Bollin Valley hiding the houses above and creating the impression of nature extending far beyond the park’s real boundaries. Thus it provides one of the greatest gifts of a park to its urban users, that of relief from the built environment.

The word ‘Carrs’ derives from the Norse ‘Kjarr’ meaning ‘meadow recovered from bog’ and so identifies not only the original state of the land but also its subsequent use, as pasture land for the villagers to graze their cattle. The park that we enjoy today began to take shape in 1925 when Henry Boddington of Pownall Hall donated the eponymous Playing Fields. The 1935 purchase by Wilmslow Urban District Council of the remaining land up to Twinnies Bridge brought the parkland to 50 acres and established The Carrs as the town’s playground.

Most of the town’s children have run in the playground on Chancel Lane and begged to be allowed to paddle in the river. After rare falls of snow, the Carrs’ one grassy slope is ridden by sledgers and the parkland becomes a Bosch canvas of colour. It takes about 20 minutes to walk from one end of The Carrs to the other. Just follow the river; it knows the way.

What you’ll find

🌲 Woodland & riverside walks

There is not quite enough woodland to get lost in (an assertion tested by many parents), but there’s enough to allow you to imagine that you might. The riverside path follows the Bollin the full length of the park.

🎪 The playground

Undoubtedly the most popular in Wilmslow, usually with an ice cream van in attendance as a reliable means of getting the children out of the river and heading home.

🎾 Tennis courts

For when SW19 is booked up. Always open and free to use.

⚽ Football pitches & skate park

There is also a basketball hoop, for those so inclined. The skate park artwork was commissioned from a local artist.

💪 RotaGym

Installed in 2017 thanks to Wilmslow Rotary and Cheshire East Council. Free outdoor gym equipment, open to anyone over 14.

🅿️ Car parking

There is a car park on Cliff Road at the main entrance, and a second car park on Styal Road. Parking charges apply at both car parks. See our Directions page for details.

The Carrs also hosts Wilmslow Parish Hall, which is available for community events and private hire.

How you can help

The Carrs is cared for by volunteers and runs on goodwill. There are several ways to support us.

🌿 Volunteer your time

Friends of the Carrs is an entirely voluntary organisation. We receive very limited funding but do our best to maintain The Carrs and run events throughout the year. If you have time to spare and love the outdoors, we’d love to hear from you — no experience needed, just enthusiasm and a pair of wellies.

🛠️ Trade and grounds assistance

From time to time we need specialist grounds maintenance that goes beyond what our volunteers can manage alone. We’d particularly welcome support from garden maintenance companies and landscaping firms in the area — whether that’s lending manpower for a day, donating the use of equipment, or helping with a specific project. Any contribution, large or small, makes a real difference.
